What Is Possible With Custom Artwork Commissions?

A piece of custom artwork is a unique way to celebrate the most important moments and milestones. These calligraphy pieces make a truly memorable gift for anniversaries, weddings or any other special occasion that you want to mark with something special.

Giving a gift should be a personal and meaningful experience. So we take the time to listen to your ideas and work with you to create a piece of calligraphy art that reflects the essence of your memories.

Below I have collated some ways you could make your custom artwork more personalised to you. Through carefully choosing the design, paper and ink colours. I also have some considerations you may want to take into account when commissioning a piece of custom art.

This is to help us create a piece of artwork that will stand the test of time and remain a cherished keepsake for years to come.

Step 1: Paper

One of the first considerations for your calligraphy artwork should be paper. This is one of the main elements of your artwork so the design and colour will depend on the paper you have chosen. There are myriad ways to customise or alter the paper to make a piece of artwork that is truly unique to your style.

The size of your calligraphy artwork will largely be dependent on what you would like written. The layout will vary slightly depending on what it is you would like written. Long passages tend to take up less space compared to poems or song lyrics. But there are still ways to alter this depending on your style.

You should consider how you will have your artwork framed. At the moment this is not a service we offer. However, it is helpful to know how you plan to frame your artwork as this will help define how large your artwork can be, as well as the margins between it and the edge of the frame.

You will also want to consider the colour of the paper you choose. If you plan to hang your artwork in a specific room consider the other colours in the room so you can pick a paper colour that will match. Even if you plan to have your artwork on white paper, this can come in many shades so you will want to choose one that will match the rest of your colour scheme.

Alternatively, you could choose a coloured paper for your artwork, if you want your artwork to stand out against the things around it. Making it the focal point of a room. Choosing a bright or coloured paper that matches your colour scheme can be a good way to achieve this.

Step 2: Ink

Black is the most popular ink colour for custom art pieces and for a good reason. It makes the calligraphy easy to read and stands out well against white paper. You might prefer black ink or you may want to make it a little more interesting, both options are acceptable.

The easiest way to add some interest is by using an ink which isn’t black. Walnut ink is a popular option as it’s still easy to read, but has a warmer tone compared with black. Gold, bronze and silver are also popular options, however you do need to think about legibility with these inks.

Metallic inks look very pretty, but they don’t work well with large areas of text. Instead what you could choose to do is highlight certain words or headings in metallic ink. With the rest in black ink to contrast.

It is also possible to mix custom ink colours. This can be a good option if you have a specific colour you want to match with. It could be your wedding colours, or if you plan to hang your custom artwork in a room with a specific colour scheme.

Again with this option, you also need to consider legibility, darker ink colours work better against white or light backgrounds. While lighter colours will work better against a darker background.

Step 3: Layout

As we’ve already discussed, the size of the paper needed for your custom artwork will largely depend on what it is that you would like written. But there are still options available for customising this.

For example, you can customise how the text appears on the page. Centrally aligned text tends to be the most popular. Or you could choose to have your text left aligned. Fully justified text is also possible as well within reason, this can largely depend on what it is you would like written.

It is also possible to have your text appear in a specific shape. This can work well if you have a short piece of text. We can work together to alter the text layout so it fits in your chosen shape. Text written in the shape of a heart is a very popular gift for couples on their wedding day. Especially if you have a memorable passage or quote that you would like written.

Circles and spirals are also very popular. These work well if you have a favourite piece of text that you would like as a focal point artwork in a room.

My favourite style is something known as a true lover’s knot. This is an old style of love token. Traditionally they were handmade by the person who intended to give it to the recipient. Typically they were used to express affection or propose marriage. They also work as a lovely piece of custom art. Especially if you choose a meaningful excerpt as the text in the artwork.
